Introduction

Andrea Limauro (b. 1976, Rome, Italy)  is a visual artist and city planner whose work explores migration and migrant identity issues, nationalistic narratives, gun violence, climate change, and other social topics. Through his attentive and laborious process of screen printing and careful painting, Limauro’s works bring into focus the looming nature of disasters due to the effects of climate change. Through the employment of striking color combinations, metal leaf, patterns, and minute details, the illusion to a dystopian future of the DC region entices the eye.

“My works draw attention to and communicate about political events that I have a strong personal connection to like immigration, civil war, nationalistic mythologies, and climate change. I look to our history to interpret our present events and for clues about the future. Data, like sea level rise projections or migration routes, and photographs from the research are frequently referenced in the paintings themselves."

Andrea Limauro

As a self-taught painter, Limauro’s aesthetic is influenced by his formative years in Italy in the 1980s and 1990s, where Roman and Renaissance art is seamlessly intertwined with anarchist and communist graffiti, posters, and printed propaganda. His approach to painting is a mix of tradition and innovation with gold leaf intruding over layers of screen printing, acrylic paint, markers, and collage. His imaginative use of patterns, colors, and architecture balance the compositions that allow for long looks and layered interpretations. A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats includes nine mixed media works providing a linnear narrative of regional landmarks gradually engulfed by nature with the United States capital eventually emerging as a new and different place.
