Biography

Richmond, VA

My earlier work was rooted in direct observation, documenting subjects over time with a slow, deliberate painting process. Now, working from photos and videos in the studio, my paintings have a different feel. Though I have permanent references that don’t change, I feel the change in my subjects more than I did before. I’m more aware of the ephemerality of things. I want to stop time and relive the majesty of those moments. Though I capture moments in photos and videos, they are poor substitutes for a lived experience. The energy of the moment fades, and I must use paint to reclaim it, infusing my work with a new sense of longing. In both title and execution, my painting "Calling" is a great example of this concept.
