Biography

Cincinnati, OH

Chaotic energy on canvas is developed with a layer of acrylic paint, then a variety of handmade papers are applied to the canvas to build the composition. Acrylic paint and flexible paste medium are added then sanded then painted on again. I alternately add watercolor crayons and pencils for geometric definition in contrast to the organic texture of the paper that comes through with the sanding. With this technique I develop a unique surface texture that vibrates with energy which can be seen in “Chagall’s Piñata.” The lines that I add act like boundaries to the color and textural fields in my paintings much like our state lines create boundaries even through the natural boundaries that Mother Nature has created, such as rivers and mountains. I reference boundary lines because they are important in both life and our natural existence in our world. As part of being an artist I get to travel a lot and am influenced by the topographical aspects of the areas around me. My colors and textures and lines create places and spaces that don’t exist but the viewer can be taken to in their mind. Working intuitively like this ensures that every single piece is truly one of a kind.
