About the Artist

Several years ago when I had been commissioned to develop designs for art quilts I was given a piece of graph paper to aid in the process. I discovered by accident that between the thin blue lines on the surface of the paper and the actual paper itself there existed an entire universe--like another dimension altogether. I found that if I was in the right frame of mind I could coax shapes from this micro-thin dimension out onto the paper. These shapes had form but no content, like letters of the alphabet. The shapes were restricted to horizontal, vertical, and 45 degree lines because that made them easier to sew on a machine. I found that if I fiddled with them they began to accumulate content--sometimes funny, sometimes dark, sometimes unintelligible. Sometimes I use fragments of drawings and reassemble them to create a new composition The titles come from free association while looking at the finished painting.

Once I have a drawing worked out on paper I scan it into my iPad and use an app called Procreate to work out the colors. The original drawing is then laid out using a tape measure, T-square, and drafting triangle onto whatever size panel I have decided on for that particular piece. Once the drawing is in place each element of the design is taped off and painted with several layers of acrylic paint. The result is razor sharp lines between areas of solid color.

Although the process is somewhat restrictive and very controlled, it is my hope that the finished paintings have a sensibility that is playful, evocative, and entertaining.
