About the Artist
My work explores the deep connections between animals and humans, often through narratives where animals embody relatable emotions and roles. At times, these connections are playful and whimsical, as in Coyote Spills the Stars, where the coyote becomes both a trickster and a creator, scattering light across the night sky. Other works take a more serious, ecological approach to highlight the impact of human activity on the natural world.
I use traditional printmaking techniques, such as wood and linoleum block printing and more recently, intaglio. Each piece begins with an idea inspired by the natural world and evolves through careful planning and craftsmanship. I start by sketching and refining my design, transferring it to a linoleum or woodblock, and carving it with attention to the interaction of positive and negative space. For multi-layered prints, I rely on reduction printing, where the same block is carved away for each color layer, requiring precision and foresight.
Printing is a hands-on process that reveals the transformation of the work layer by layer. I apply ink to the block, align it with the paper, and either hand-print or use a press. This iterative process builds depth and texture, with each pull of the paper bringing the image closer to completion. I sometimes enhance my prints with additional drawing or painting to emphasize key details or themes. Materials are carefully chosen, favoring sustainable inks and textured papers that add to the tactile quality of the work.
Through my art, I aim to encourage viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the natural world. Pieces like Coyote Spills the Stars invite a sense of wonder and imagination, while works such as Cycles highlight critical ecological narratives. These stories remind us of the interconnectedness of life and our responsibility to protect it.
Each print is both a technical and creative journey—a blend of deliberate craftsmanship and intuitive exploration. By focusing on the unique qualities of each animal and the larger themes they represent, I strive to create works that inspire empathy and a deeper connection to the world around us.
