About the Artist
Joyce McCarten makes layered abstract paintings that are metaphors for the unpredictable nature of life. She uses a personal language of form, gesture, line, and color in oil or acrylic paint to allow the unpredictable to emerge. She lives in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C. and has traveled the world to rattle her perspective on life. From small Plein air paintings and sketchbook drawings, she has been reminded of the structures of the landscape as well as the diversity of all nature. She also uses charcoal and erasure drawings to explore the plasticity of form for abstractions. In this process, a painting can change quickly from busy mark-making to nearly minimalist forms. Early in her career, she learned the skill of opening a space up with big forms, to closing it down with much integration of marks. There is always a dialogue going on between the work of art and her own sensitivities. Lives and works in Falls Church, VA.
