About the Artist
I work with the most beautiful and most prized woods in the world using the figure (Grain Patterns) in the wood just like painters use pigment to express their artistic vision. All boxes begin with a select cut of premium wood (not run-of-the-mill boards) and the shape is sculpted from a single unique block using the bandsaw and all the machine and hand tools in my well-equipped cabinet woodworking shop. After careful attention to detail and refinement using careful sanding technique, I begin my fine finish. I hand brush lacquer with a badger hair brush to achieve an expert "flowed on" finish and then burnish it to satin smoothness. The piece is then polished, adhesive is brushed into interior surfaces and rayon fibers are blown in with a compressor gun. Felt glides are added for a smooth effortless action on the opening of the box and felt feet are applied on the bottom. All pieces are signed and a card with the genus of wood, description and care instructions is placed inside. Lives and works in Oneonta, NY.
