About the Artist
Look carefully. There is beauty almost everywhere. I enjoy photography because it requires me to look carefully at the world. If I don't see it, I can't photograph it. A successful photograph allows me to share with others the beauty that I see. I enjoy working slowly. Most of my photographs are made with an old-fashioned view camera. All my prints are made in a traditional darkroom. A view camera and a traditional darkroom both require a slow and thoughtful process. They are the right tools for me. The photograph "Jordan Pond" is an interesting example. My camera was set up in shallow water. While I was waiting for the light to fade, I became aware of someone on the trail behind me. When I was putting away the camera, she said, "This is a beautiful place. If you weren't here with that big camera, I would have never stopped to look at it." It occurred to me that I had achieved my purpose without even developing the negative.
