About the Artist
I create hand-powered pendulum machines with single and dual rotation points. A single touch moves the pieces for over half-hour. Stainless, copper, and iron pendulum machines are hand-formed, milled and balanced for continued movement. Counterbalances are set in an opposing axis with upper counterweights sliding on arcing elements. A series of quick sketches will define the initial form of a sculpture. From that, I'll start drawing out material types and sizes. Detail sketches of assembly thicknesses and order so I'll know how to fabricate and assemble the connections and components. It all gets laid out on a big cardboard sheet with concentric circles to figure out size, shape, moments, and levers. After that it's cut, drill, polished, and assemble with a little tweaking to get the final balance. Lives and works in Birmingham, AL.
