Where Life Exists, Stories Happen I’m looking for the stories of life – wherever I may find them. Whether it's a cat stalking a (stuffed) mouse, or the dance of the snowy egret stalking his neighbor, the act of living tells a story. With each picture, we can see a glimpse into the life of another. With each glimpse, we can better envision the different stories of our world of all creatures great and small. Each photo represents anywhere from a few hours to years of patience, waiting, anticipating, envisioning, and hoping. I’m a wildlife photographer. When I’m not photographing wildlife outside, I’m looking for the wildlife inside. I do all my own “developing” on the computer. I edit in many different ways – sometimes I’m going for a more painterly style, so I bring down the contrasts, modify the tones, etc. Sometimes I’m going for hyper-realistic, so I work with the details. I use 5 different types of archival papers on which to print, along with canvas and metal. I pick the medium depending upon the look I desire. The artwork titled “The Scholar” is printed on canvas, because the textures are the second subject of the piece. The coarse hair of the mouse, the tattered edges of the old books, even the linen binding sticking out from the broken spine, all of these textures add to the warm, scholarly feel of the piece and the canvas brings it all out beautifully. Other pieces of artwork are about the fine details. That would be lost on canvas, and so I print it myself on a fine art Baryta, etching, or smooth rag paper to help show those details. I have been doing fine art photography for 28 years. I’ve had my work published on NationalGeographic.com and in The Virginia Wildlife Magazine. I’m a Virginia Master Naturalist and most of all I want to share the amazing world I see through the lens of my fine art photography. I’ve been known to sit in the same spot for days to capture just the perfect moment, and I want to share the delight in these discoveries. I hope that we can marvel together at the little details of the world and the uniqueness that each living creature brings us!
